From artistic documentaries and theater tribunals (e.g. the works of Milo Rau) to counter-forensic investigations (Forensic Architecture) and witness videos against police violence (Black Lives Matter) – current phenomena between art, media, and activism raise the question of processes of witnessing. While cultural studies research has primarily discussed the figure of the witness in the context of historically singular, traumatic events (e.g., Holocaust; Laub 1992; Krämer/Weigel 2017), this seminar will furthermore focus on the practices of witnessing in the media assemblages of witness, testimony, and witnessing public within the "hybrid media system" (Chadwick 2013) of the present. In particular, the aspect of a multiplication of witness perspectives in theater (Vismann 2011), film (Schwartz 2009), television (Ellis 2000), and social video (Schankweiler et al 2019) will be emphasized.The goal of the Master's seminar is to provide a systematic overview of the current state of research on media witnessing, to facilitate intensive discussions of this problem complex, and to lay the groundwork for further research. Methodologically, the seminar combines the intensive, critical examination of theoretical and analytical texts with practical reflections and exercises in acts of witnessing.
