What is public and what is private—and above all when and for whom? What must be publicly visible, for what reasons, and what must remain private? What risks are associated with 'going public' through the media? How freely do we navigate through public space? Who has access to the public stage at all, and under what conditions? How do which media shape our relationship to the public? What characterizes theatrical and cinematic publics—and what distinguishes them from one another? What are the limits of the public sphere today, and what is its continuing promise of democratic participation?

With such questions, the seminar addresses a key concept of liberal democracy, modern society, and contemporary media culture from an interdisciplinary perspective. From classics of political philosophy (Kant 1977 [1783], Hegel 2009 [1821]) to modern critical approaches (Arendt 2002 [1958]; Foucault 2009 [1983]) to current media analyses of "automated platform publics" (Pasquale 2017; Gillespie 2014), this seminar focuses on a shared reading of theory. Particular attention will be paid to the notion of "witnessing publics" (McLagan 2003; Stam 2005)—a concept that is gaining new relevance between smartphone cultures, Black Lives Matter, and the "forensic turn." The text discussions are furthermore complemented by practical exercises that can test, extend and question the theories by means of reflections on everyday perceptions.
