Although the concrete places, social contexts, economic conditions, and political positions are constitutive for aesthetic experiences, they are neglected in classical art theories. The seminar excursion starts here and focuses on the contexts of aesthetic experience. International art shows such as Documenta 15 (18.6.-25.9.2022 in Kassel) offer the opportunity to discuss virulent questions of contemporary art in a site-specific, historically concrete, and practical way and to reflect on them by means of art and cultural theory as well as art criticism. With regards to the program of Documenta 15, the following questions, among others, arise: To what extent does the history of Documenta, but also the venue Kassel, shape the current exhibition and the experience of individual art works? What collaborative forms and collective practices are emerging in the current production and reception/participation of art? To what extent do they break with aesthetic concepts such as individual artist genius or work autonomy? What specific relevance do they have for positions from the Global South as well as for postcolonial and feminist contexts of art? What forms of knowledge do the exhibited works convey? What aesthetic experiences do contemporary art practices enable, and how do they differ from those of everyday culture?

The seminar excursion will be held in 4 parts: 1. preparatory project work in small groups on selected artists/works; 2. thematic textual discussions of aesthetics and art theory; 3. excursion to Documenta 15 in July; and 4. wrap-up and project presentation. A field trip grant application is planned.

Please familiarize yourself with the Documenta 15 program before the first session and select artists you find interesting.
